The sea breaker across Port Dennison Harbour... we walked this today...
The obelisk is a memorial for all the seaman who have lost their lives, including those on the HMS Leander, whose ships instruments took both ship and its crew in error into a dangerous rock area here in Dongara in the 1890's. The leander and all of its men were lost. The obelisk is in place to remind ships to check their bearings and to keep clear of the cliffs edge..A local family who now own a ship called ' The Leander ', paid for and donated a silver plaque, which is now on the side of the obelisk.
