8th Sept Sandfire, bush fires, Roebuck and hello BROOME...

As we have said, the roads are dustier, the earth is redder and the sun is getting hotter. We are drinking water like its going out of fashion and buying cold drinks at every road house we stop at. Now we knew the road to Broome would be hard, so here comes the story (short!).

We always top up or fill up at every roadhouse (garage) and its no different for this journey. We stop off at Sandfire Roadhouse and see the peacocks they have wandering round, have a coffee and a snack.
Back on the road again and some 270km down the road we top up using the spare can....

Anyway about 30km from the Roebuck roadhouse we have now emptied the fuel tank and used the spare 5 and half litre of fuel we now carry. We are now on a wing and a prayer. There is a smoky woody haze in the air, we cant see much but there appears to be clouds of something ahead.

I have started this habit of 'red fuel light on' and I start counting the markers as we pass them. We just keep going, I suggest to John we wave down a truck  and see if they have any spare fuel as the fuel lite is now on and has been for some time...John keeps driving. We pass some trees and I think, oh he'll pull in under them as the sun is about 95......but no we are still rolling. About half hour down the road the signs for the Roebuck appear.... and yes we make it, but god Ruby is thirsty..... Added to this the Roebuck is on the junction of the only road leading into Broome and guess what???? the road is flippin closed at least for the next 2 hours as there are bush fires along it and the Police have cordoned off the road. So into the road house we go and guess what??? NO ATM, so we are still without cash.  Everything is again on the card. The lady tells us to help ourselves to coffee, so we order some lunch and sit ourselves down to wait for the road to be opened again. The road station is by now full and there are many indigenious families and groups both inside and sat outside on the grass verges of the road house. The staff have been told they have to stay on shift and work until the road reopens. So as you can imagine its flippin busy.

here comes the piccies

The peacocks at Sandfire Roadhouse

Dont think that ones working John lol....

FLIRT!!!!
Back on the road and heading for Roebuck on a 'wing' and prayer...... (did you get it wing and prayer?)

The Police road block....first thing we see as we pull into Roebuck..

Just been put out and the road is opened again...

Yes we did drive through these...

We have been given a good camp site to stay on by June and Burt , The Palm Grove. This is stay that taught to question what some people think is good and actually what is it on a site that we need and as two in a tent we need very different from someone in a caravan...anyway we do the two nights book and get by.. Now Broome is famous for its cable beach.....so read on...
