11th Oct, Leaving Airlie , onwards and upwards to Home Hill

True to form, the next generation of Millwall players, make sure, whether we want to or not, we're up nice and early. Tent packed and our goodbyes said, we're on the road again. We've got a bit of time until the next house sit, so we're gonna head north, up the coast for a bit. No real destination, just up.

The road remains true to its winding form and we just chug along doing around 80klm hr. We're in the sugar cane area and are not surprisingly, surrounded by sugar cane. criss crossing the roads are what seem to be mini railway tracks. this is for the mini railways used to transport the sugar cane. (duh!) Our first port of call is Bowen, were we have a light lunch and check out all the charity shops for new wardrobes.

Back on the bike and back to the windy roads and now, just to keep me interested, pot holes. I swear someone from Barking and Dagenham roads department, has some how managed to win the road repair contract for Queensland, not only that, he/she seems hell bent on getting more pot holes per foot than Grafton Road. O.K., so now the journey becomes really interesting. Lean on the bend, swerve round the pothole, dodge the bloody great cow that's eating the verge with its ar@e in the road, a quick look round, cor a mountain covered in mist, no, its smoke, sh@t Australia's on fire again, never mind, another bend coming up and that roo don't look like it knows what to do!.

Now this morning we took antihistamine's for all that pee the sandflys managed to donate on us and we were assured they were non drowsy. Well, the Histamine part seems to be working, but the non drowsy part don't seem to work for Lin. For the last half hour, I've been getting clump, clump, clump on the back of me helmet as Lin starts to nod. We ain't got too much further to go, so, OK, I'll put up with it. Then she decides to go the whole hog and snuggle down. She puts her arms round me waist, leans into me and lays her helmet on mine. I'm having great fun...., Australia's on fire again, I'm leaning for two on the bends, swerving in and out the potholes, dodging the Roo's and cows and being bent in two by Lin. All I can think is "are we there yet"?

At last we arrive, Lin comes to and is as chirpy as a sparrow and seems to think it was a nice short journey. Yer right!. We manage to find the local council camp site, which is small (only about twelve pitches), quiet and NO sodding kids, also we have access to the local swimming pool which is part of the camp, say no more, we're in.

Its not long before the tents up and we're taking a wander around town. When we get back there a kids swimming/ tennis thing going on round were the pool is and some daft tart has found out how to work the tannoy. Now she's that close to the kids, she could point and tell em were things are, but no, her voice carries so much better at two hundred decibels. Just to put the icing on the cake, some little git with a death wish, starts riding a mini motorbike up and down his front garden and carries on for the next two hours. ( We find out later he's part of a problem family) Before we arrived out here, I really loved kids, all of them, now I find me-self wondering if I could kill a couple and get away with it.....
Things finally go quiet and its peace at last. We settle down outside with a couple of well earnt coffee's, when something starts dropping from the sky. Seems like at least some those fires were set on purpose. They burn the fields prior to harvesting, to get rid of the chaff and everyone in a ten mile radius get covered in soot. Life's like that, full of little surprises and theres always someone ready to drop crap on ya from a great height .....

Here come the piccies...

Lots of towns in Australia have taken to have a BIG icon of some sort, why this one chose the mango, beggars belief, but they did... and its right next to a cafe called mango Freeze and guess what everything they sale is linked to the mango....

Out of Airlie an very much on our way to Home hill...

And here we are, this is Home hill Post office... cute or what?

The main street...

and heres John.. sat outside our house ....

This is the olympic pool building that is alongside our campsite, (for which I might add) we can use as often and whenever we like, free of charge..

and heres the pool, its filled with natural water and because of the way the water and the land is locally the pool self fills. The temperature was lovely, the pool was spotless and I was swimming on average twice a day here....heaven.

Some local flowers... ahhhh

And we had the best fish and chips here for £6 each... yum yum what a flippin bargain, especially out here...

John...really ??????

Ok, if you cant beat him (and believe me I have tried) your best to just join him ...lol

The main street in Home hill.  Not much there but quite quaint and some ways quite sad...as its a dying community as the older shop keepers close there shops up as they are not able to sale them...

and they paint their lamp posts.. how cool is that ?

and peace........

Thats all for today folks,, bye for now, love to all. xxxxx and Rock on to our kids  xxxx
